I have seen many advertisements and articles about the butterfly tattoo and as a result, I learned to appreciate them even more. I've learned tattoos are personal body art that expresses an individual's most private emotions. Tattoos are the visible and physical expression of an invisible part of the individual. They have proven themselves to be one of the most beautiful expressions of personal body art . Women are the primary recipients of the butterfly tattoo.

The origin of butterfly tattoos is weaved deep in to the threads of civilization. They are as colorful as they are enjoyed by nearly all who see them beautifully displayed on an individual's body. Their appeal spans across most cultural boundaries. Their designs have evolved along with each cultures' view of them. And the butterfly remains fragile yet inviting to those who see their beauty through the eyes of the soul.

Butterflies over the Ages

The influences of history gave high value to the butterfly tattoos. And today they still hold a high place with individuals who choose them for personal body art. Did you know the Aztecs considered the butterfly as a representation of the souls of their warriors that died in battle. They also used the butterfly to symbolize their women who lost their lives in child birth. For the Aztecs, anyone associated with the butterfly held a place of very high standing of honor and respect.

In the Japanese culture the feminine tattoo had special meaning. A single butterfly represented the womanhood in a young woman. A double butterfly tattoo represent a woman with a good and blissful marriage. The Greeks saw the butterfly as a symbol of a person's psyche.

The Transformation

For many, the butterfly represents transformation and the frailty of life. People often associate life with the many transformations of the butterfly. First there is the caterpillar, then the cocoon. And then comes the creature beautifully designed for the enjoyment of human on lookers.

The love affair people have with butterflies relates to the shortness of life's adventures. And the short lived personal experiences that express life. For example, some people say the transformation process symbolizes love and joy. They represent instability and changing life here on Earth. Others feel butterflies represent the journey of the soul from being on Earth to a heavenly entity. The Spiritual aspect of the butterfly represents the the losing of a life of sin to the gaining of a life through spirituality.

People are drawn by the beauty and frailty of the butterfly and the uniqueness of the emotions they feel from deep within. When the butterfly tattoo is joined with a red rose it symbolizes life. When it is joined with a blue rose, it symbolizes spirit. The rainbow tattoo and a butterfly symbolizes an individual's sexual preference.

Embracing the Butterfly Tattoo

The various reasons for embracing the butterfly tattoo which compliments the creature's fleeting yet short life. Their uniqueness and their fragility expresses the beauty of the hundreds of tattoo picture designs that wearers select for their body art. People add their own personal touch to the selection tot best express their sentiments. Butterfly tattoos represent the message they wish to impart to the world. And the placement of the butterfly tattoo is just as important as the design.

The wearers place them in what seems to be the most sensitive areas of the body. They may be seen on the shoulder, the ankle, in the pubic area, on the abdomen and on the persons back. The size and multiple colors of the butterfly tattoo are relevant to the individual's determination to fully express themselves. While most butterfly tattoos are beautifully colored, many may be gray or the outline of a butterfly.

An excellent Hub. Well researched and well written. Yes, the butterfly is very significant right down through history.

I think in Elisabeth Kubler-Ross's autobiography, when that great woman visited Dachau concentration camp right after World War Two, it was found that a great many butterfly figures had been carved into the bunks of those who knew they would die at the hands of their Nazi captors. The meaning? A transition to a better life: heaven.
