Loving Your Children Beyond the Challenges

Most parents love their children and would do almost anything for them. Unfortunately, there are situations in which their love is challenged by the child to the very edge of sanity for both the child and the parent. The child they lovingly raised becomes a person they don't recognize. The child defies every rule and safety precaution established for its best care and development. The child becomes defiant and resists every form of adult supervision, guidance and authority. What happened? There are a number of possibilities that may be explored to determine what made the child become so oppositional to everything meant for its well being. First parents may wish to evaluate their parenting skills, is there anything different about their interactions with the child opposed to times gone by? Do they need to reevaluate how they are raising the child? Is there an underline health issue that needs investigation and medical assistance to resolve? Is this a phase the child is going through? Is there a medical condition that explains the child's behavior?

Most parents agree children are naturally defiant to a certain degree. Regardless of the age of
the child they will challenge the parents to see if they can get away with "it." However, the parent knows how to bring the child around. They remind them to reconsider their behavior or deal with the impending consequences. Often times the child pulls him/herself together and learns to live within the rules of the environment it was raised in.

When the Problem is More than Defiance

When parents find themselves dealing with negative behavior that challenges the peace in the family, there could be a more serious underlined problem that requires professional intervention. Examples of such situations include parents walking on egg shells in an effort not to upset the child. Parents trying to avoid discussions that will cause the child to become
confrontational. The child is resentful towards any form of adult supervision. Parents find themselves screaming and yelling at the child in an effort to get corporation. The child resists any form of structure that holds him/her accountable.

Before the situation gets to this degree of intensity, professional help may be a way to bring things back in focus. The deliberate resistance by the child takes away from other members of the family. When the child is resistant to any form of structure or responsibility, there may be a more serious problem than childhood defiance. Some children fall victim to an illness known as Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Before a child is diagnosed with ODD, first eliminate other illnesses which mimmick ODD.

Seek professional help which is trained to conduct medical evaluations for other illnesses. The professional evaluations may include a check for attention deficit hyperactivity or ADHD. A check for depression and by polar disorder. Is there an anxiety disorder? What about learning disorders? Make sure all other possible illnesses have been investigated and canceled out.The evaluation may result in possible solutions that returns the child and family to normal interactions.

Seeking Professional Help

A child with ODD displays certain characteristics that may be mistaken for normal defiant children. The difference is the intensity of the negative behavior. Some of the symptoms include not taking responsibility for their behavior. They blame others instead of themselves for their behavior. Its easier for them to start an argument and keep confusion than it is to comply with established rules and authority. When they get angry they say mean and hateful things to hurt the authority figure.

With professional guidance parents learn how to manage a child with ODD. Authority figures in the life of an ODD child are encouraged to enroll the child in programs which teach them how to handle social interactions. Enroll the child in classes which teach handling negative behavior and problem solving skills. The child will benefit from classes which teach him/her how to interact with others. The classes will also teach the parents how to interact with the child. Anger management classes are recommended for the child and the parents. Parents are also encouraged to enroll
in all the classes recommended for the child. this keeps the child and parents on the same page. These classes will teach the parents how to choose their battles and maintain peace in the home.

About 40 years ago the doctors felt my daughter had a form of ADHD. They did not know exactly what it was be cause the buzz words were not as free flowing as they are today. The docs wanted to put her on a boat load of meds. Her dad and I decided we're not going to medicate our child because her brain was still developing and we did not want to alter her personality based on meds. We decided to "wear her out". By wear her out I mean we kept her so busy it almost killed us. She could out last us in all the many activities we introduced her to. We wanted to get rid of the excess energy she had. Today she is a normal mother of one child. Does this method work for everyone, not hardly. It was our decision to take the situation in our own hands and not have her medicated in a way that we could not truly understand her personality. You have to make the final decision and trust the entity you believe in to guide you in what ever decision you make regarding your child. You are in my prayers.
